Question by cmist83: How should a person from a single parent household answer the question What do your parents do?
A question that I get asked often in graduate school but I have difficulty answering is “what do your parents do? I come from a single parent household and have no idea what my father does. This came up just last week when I was in class and a professor had everyone state they name, where they were from and what their parents did. I usually wind up making something up. Any advice on a good way to answer this question.

To be absolutely honest with you, I find it to be a very rude question to ask another because it is a way of judging another.
I’d either be honest and only answer with my parent’s occupation and continue talking (they should understand that there’s only one parent), or I’d make up the second occupation.
It is a breach of etiquette as one shouldn’t be judged by their parents’ professions and not everyone has two parents in this day and age.
