American White Pelicans at the Noxubee National Wildlife Refuge!
Yesterday morning I felt like I’d hit the jackpot when I saw wood storks at the refuge for the first time. I think we topped it today.
We had left the rookery and were headed back when this flock of approximately 40 pelicans flew over our head and landed on the other side of Bluff Lake. My boat only has a small trolling motor, so it took us nearly 30 minutes to get close enough to photograph them. According to the U.S. Geological Survey’s bird list for the Noxubee National Wildlife Refuge, they are only seen here every 2-5 years. One of the Refuge managers told me more than a year ago, that someone had spotted a single individual a couple of years before.
